Nanako Matsushima started her career as a swim suit model. She appeared in Kon'na koi no hanashi in 1997 alongside Hiroyuki Sanada and Koji Tamaki.
In 1998, Matsushima and Sanada appeared in Ringu.
Nanako Matsushima was a main character in A Story of Love and Great Teacher Onizuka. In February 2001, she married Takashi Sorimachi, her co-star in Great Teacher Onizuka. They have a daughter who was born in May 2004.
Matsushima is considered as the "Queen Bee of J-dorama" (Queen of Japanese Drama).
